It was believed that if Jormungand ever released his tail, then it would herald the beginning of Ragnarok, and would slay his ancient enemy, Thor. In Norse mythology connection between Jormungand and endings are made, however, ending does not have an entirely evil tone, there is also a hint that something else will arise after the last battle. Norse dragons also can be seen to take on an aspect of new beginnings, and of hope and change.
The Runes on the reverse are the elder Futhark: a mystical Norse alphabet developed around 200 BCE. According to Norse myth, the alphabet was discovered in a vision by the god Odin. The word ‘rune’ literally means a ‘whisper’ or ‘secret' and are used as a device for meditation and divination, to help gain insight into situations or questions.
