The Helm of Awe is a type of rune stave and a magical spell of protection used by early Vikings. According to a number of legends, this apotropaic (protective) symbol was intended to confer invincibility in the wearer or instill fear in one’s enemies. Today, it is used as a charm of protection and an emblem of identification by Asatru believers.
The Runes surrounding the Vegvisir are the elder Futhark: a mystical Norse alphabet developed around 200 BCE. According to Norse myth, the alphabet was discovered in a vision by the god Odin. The word ‘rune’ literally means a ‘whisper’ or ‘secret' and are used as a device for meditation and divination, to help gain insight into situations or questions.
